Beyond 900 Fund

For generations, the Reading School community has gathered to celebrate the School’s founding in 1125, honouring those who have served the town and rededicating ourselves to the School’s mission. This year’s occasion held special significance as we marked nine centuries of teaching, service, and social impact.

On 28th November, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO visited Reading School to commemorate the 900th anniversary. His presence highlighted the School’s enduring commitment to delivering exceptional, inclusive education for local children. The Duke’s longstanding dedication to championing young people resonated deeply with staff, students, parents and guests, underscoring the importance of strong community partnerships at the heart of the School.

During his visit, The Duke observed local primary school pupils participating in the Future Stories programme, which inspires confidence, raises aspirations and broadens access to high-quality learning opportunities. This long-running initiative ensures children from all backgrounds can benefit from a Reading School education.

The day concluded with a Commemoration Service, attended by the Reading School community, The Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, MP Matt Rodda, the Mayor of Reading, invited guests, and local partners. The service reflected on the School’s rich history and future mission, beautifully captured in the words of Rev’d Dr Chris Evans:

"It’s a small thing to be part of this community, so let us proceed with humility. Let us together this day celebrate. Enjoy all that grace, and all that goodness, while proceeding humbly with hope in our hearts, and even though this too shall pass, may we live knowing the best is yet to be."

The event was a moving celebration of Reading School’s legacy and its continued dedication to shaping the lives of young people for generations to come.
