Rugby, Camaraderie, and Celebration: A Memorable Day at Reading School's Rugby Festival

Saturday 14th September brought high drama and top-tier rugby in what proved to be a day of celebration, community spirit, and sporting excellence.

The Rugby Festival saw the coming together of Old Redingensians (ORs), current and former staff, and our recent leavers for an event that truly embodied the spirit of camaraderie at Reading School. With the sun shining brightly, the day attracted a fantastic turnout of players, supporters, and their families, creating an electric atmosphere on and off the field.

The event kicked off with a lively and inclusive touch rugby match, welcoming participants of all skill levels and ages. From the youngest enthusiasts to seasoned veterans, everyone got involved, either by playing or cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines. The friendly but spirited competition featured staff taking on the recent leavers from the Class of 2024, with laughter, energy, and plenty of school pride filling the air.

Adding a special touch to the event, we were honoured to welcome two distinguished alumni: former teachers Bob Lewis (Former Deputy Headmaster & PE Teacher; 1976 – 2010) and John Oakes (Former South House Master & Head of Biology; 1970 - 1997). Both took part in presenting the day’s awards and shared fond memories of their time at Reading School. Their stories were a heartwarming reminder of the deep connections and shared history that continue to unite our community.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Matt Kearle (Head of Rugby), Miss Katie Rosser-Evans (Teacher of Chemistry), our Rugby Ambassador, and the Society Office for their tireless efforts in organizing such a successful and unforgettable day. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the staff, students, and families who contributed to making this event a true celebration of our school spirit.

As we look forward to the 900th anniversary of Reading School, this Rugby Festival stands as a testament to the enduring strength of our community and the lasting legacy of rugby at our institution. We are excited to build on this momentum and anticipate many more events that will bring together ORs, staff, students, families, and the local community in celebration.

This year’s festival also marked the return of the Clacy Cup, which was awarded for the first time since 2008. The prestigious award went to Adam Woodcock (OR 2017- 2024), who was named ‘Player of the Match’ as a recent leaver. The cup was presented by none other than Guest of Honour, Mr. John Oakes, whose presence added a sense of history and tradition to the occasion.

In addition, the inaugural J. Fulwell Rugby Cup was awarded to Joe Tett (OR 2010- 2017; Teacher of PE), recognized as ‘Player of the Match’ representing the teachers and ORs. This cup, generously donated by Jonathan Fulwell (OR 1998 - 2005), honours his unwavering support of Reading School rugby, from funding crucial equipment like the scrum machine to supplying kit and rugby balls. The cup was presented by our second Guest of Honour, former teacher and Housemaster, Mr. Bob Lewis.

We are thrilled to announce that the Rugby Festival will return in 2025, promising more exciting matches, memorable moments, and opportunities to strengthen the bonds that make our school community so special.
