Last Thursday, the fairways of Henley Golf Club played host to a memorable gathering of past and present members of the Reading School community, as eight current students joined 25 Old Redingensians for the Redingensians Golfing Society’s March fixture.

The day began with a crisp spring chill, but as play progressed the sun broke through and stayed with the players for much of the afternoon, creating perfect conditions for a wonderful day of golf.

This year’s fixture marked a first for the Redingensians Golfing Society where junior players were invited to take part alongside Old Redingensians. It was a fitting and symbolic moment as boys who currently sit in the same classrooms walked the same fairways as those who did so years and in some cases decades before them.

Watching a current student step onto the first tee alongside an Old Redingensian is exactly the kind of moment the Redingensians, with the support of Reading School, seeks to create, where generations connect not only through shared history, but through shared experience.

Competition Highlights

The prizes and trophies were pleasingly spread across the field.

George G (12STh) took the headline prize for Best Individual Stableford Score, finishing with an impressive 39 points.

With par set at 36 points, George finished three under par relative to his handicap allowance of 23 shots.

Steve Johnston (OR 1979-1986), Treasurer of the Society, finished a close second with 37 points.

In the team competition, there was a three-way tie for the best Stableford team score. Prize winners included:

  • Owen L (12STh)
  • George Govey (12STh)
  • Thomas C (9S)

Meanwhile, Alun Lloyd (OR 1998-2005) claimed the Nearest the Pin trophy and was also part of one of the prize-winning Stableford teams.

Trophies and prizes were presented with customary flair by Ken Brown (OR 1955-1963), rounding off a competitive but thoroughly enjoyable day on the course.

A Day That Bridged Generations

Feedback from the Old Redingensian golfers spoke volumes. Many commented on how polite, engaging and enjoyable the students were to play alongside.

The feeling was very much mutual. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day, with several saying the highlight had been the chance to speak with Old Redingensians and hear about their journeys beyond Reading School. Moments like these are a real credit to the boys and a wonderful reflection of the spirit that connects the Reading School community across generations.

A special thank you goes to Michael Barrott (OR 1966–1973), Alun Lloyd (OR 1998-2005) and Ryan Blade (Teacher of PE; Head of Cricket) for organising the day and to Henley Golf Club for hosting the event.

We look forward to sharing details of the next golf fixture soon.
