Reading School's Community Rowing Programme Sets Sail

Reading School's refurbished boat house recently welcomed its inaugural session with students from the Ukrainian community, marking a significant milestone for the Reading School Community Rowing Programme. Spearheaded by former Olympic rower James Stephenson, this initiative aims to foster inclusivity and community engagement through the sport of rowing.

As preparations for the summer term soft launch are underway, the boat house buzzes with activity as rowing equipment is meticulously set up. The programme's vision extends beyond sporting prowess; it seeks to provide children from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to engage in rowing while fostering a sense of camaraderie within local communities.

The inaugural session saw families immersed in hands-on boat construction activities before embarking on their maiden voyage along the serene waters of the River Thames. For many participants, this marked their first foray into rowing, and the palpable enthusiasm was truly contagious.

Gratitude is extended to the Great British Rowing Team, the Paralympic rowing squad, and Love Rowing for their unwavering support in realising the programme's aspirations. A special acknowledgment is reserved for Peter Coggan (OR1962-1964) in America, whose generous contribution facilitated the acquisition of one of the programme's new rowing boats.

With excitement brewing, Reading School eagerly anticipates sharing the progress of its Community Rowing Programme in the months ahead. Stay tuned as we embark on this journey of empowerment, diversity, and community building through the art of rowing.
