On 11th February, over 40 students attended a 90-minute virtual session led by Investment Managers Daniel Money and Elizabeth Hart, CFA from Rathbones Group Plc after school. Parents/carers were also welcome to attend. The session focused on essential personal finance skills and career insights into the financial sector, offering students a strong foundation for managing their money
During the session, students learned practical skills, such as financing life goals, from university to buying a home, and how to assess risk and invest wisely. Daniel and Elizabeth also shared valuable advice on risk and return considerations when investing as well as an overview of different financial tools and a brief guide to the stock market.
This course proved especially beneficial for students preparing for key life decisions, helping them gain the knowledge needed for financial planning, risk management and informed decision-making as they approach university and career milestones.
Additionally, Daniel and Elizabeth offered career advice, discussing how to break into the finance industry, key skills to develop and the importance of early networking to unlock career opportunities. They also encouraged students to be brave in pursuing roles outside of their degree path, sharing how the best account manager they know graduated in music.
“The financial awareness lecture was absolutely brilliant , very clear concise professional and informative , we need more like this. Is it open to the public ? It would be amazing to have other schools on there, their students would love this information, not to mention some of my old care leavers and foster carers.” – Mr Appiah, Engagement and Inclusion Lead, Reading School
"This session opened my eyes to the importance of thinking about money early. I never realised how much planning goes into things like university costs, buying a home or saving for the future. It’s not just about earning money, it’s about managing it wisely." - 13 student
“I found the part about investing and financial tools really interesting. They explained the stock market in a way that actually made sense, showing how different types of investments work and the risks involved." - Year 10 student
“Thank you so much for this incredible course—it was absolutely beneficial! I’m looking forward to more finance-related courses for kids. Interestingly, they also mentioned that their best account manager graduated in music —what a wonderful message!” – Parent of a Year 9 student
“I thought it was well-paced and catchy for the audience, thank you!” – Parent of a Year 12 student
A big thank you to Rathbones, and to Daniel Money and Elizabeth Hart for leading this insightful session. We hope this event inspires students to take control of their financial futures and explore exciting career opportunities in finance.
