OR Spotlight: Tads Ciecierski-Holmes (OR 2009 – 2017)

Quality Improvement at the Uganda Cancer Institute

In July 2024, Tads collaborated with the Uganda Cancer Institute's pediatric team on crucial Quality Improvement projects. Alongside a fellow medical student from Cambridge, Tads focused on enhancing multidisciplinary tumor board meetings and auditing pediatric solid tumor pathology reports. This hands-on work involved extensive data collection over a four-week period, providing a solid foundation for ongoing remote collaboration to continue improving patient care.

Supporting the Kanyike Project

During the same period in Uganda, Tads visited the Kanyike Project health center as a representative for their UK-based trustees. This visit involved delivering donations of children's vests from the UK and gathering essential information for upcoming grant applications. The Kanyike Project, dedicated to improving healthcare and education in Uganda, greatly benefited from his involvement and support.

Expedited Courier for Zion Medical Centre

In a unique turn of events, Tads played a crucial role in assisting the Zion Medical Centre by delivering a key for a vaccine fridge from the UK. This key, essential for the operation of their new vaccine services, enabled the centre to begin offering critical vaccinations. He highly recommends students consider volunteering at Zion Medical Centre for a variety of roles, including secretarial jobs, social media management, and healthcare assistance.

Coaching Uganda's Modern Pentathlon Team

Adding to an already impressive resume, Tads leveraged his experience as a competitive Modern Pentathlon athlete and qualified shooting coach to support the Ugandan national Modern Pentathlon team. Coaching a shooting session before the team headed off to the African Championships in Egypt, he was inspired by the athletes' dedication and resilience despite limited resources.

Radiology Placement in Christchurch, New Zealand

Recently, Tads completed a four-week placement with the radiology team in Christchurch, New Zealand. This experience, part of an ongoing commitment to medical excellence, provided valuable insights and skills that will undoubtedly benefit his future medical career.

Ongoing Research and Data Analysis

Currently engaged in various research projects, Tads continues to contribute to important studies, including a collaborative project between researchers from Mbarara and Southampton on antenatal couples counseling in Uganda. Despite the data analysis work being somewhat tedious, his dedication to advancing medical knowledge remains unwavering.
