Mr Nev Davies, better known to his patients as “Nev the Knee,” is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where he has worked for the past 16 years. He qualified as a doctor from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London in 2000, after house jobs in and around London,  he spent six years of specialist training in Oxford, including a paediatric fellowship at Westmead Kids in Sydney, Australia, before taking up his consultant post in Reading in 2010.

He is one of only a handful of surgeons in the UK who treats knee problems across the entire age range, from newborns to the elderly. Alongside his NHS work, Nev runs a private practice across Reading, and at Fortius, London and leads paediatric orthopaedic research at the Royal Berkshire Hospital as Principal Investigator on several national studies, including two trials published in The Lancet.

Outside the clinic, Nev is a trustee of Power Up to Play, a UK charity working to prevent ACL injuries in young athletes: a cause close to his heart, not least because his own rugby career ended with exactly that injury as a medical student. He has spoken on the subject at conferences from Munich to Manchester, and been interviewed by Sky Sports and the BBC.

During this lecture, Nev will share what it actually takes to become an orthopaedic surgeon, what a day in his working life looks like, and why the most important work he does happens nowhere near an operating table. The talk will be in two parts: the first on injury avoidance, and the second on his career path. PE students and anyone simply interested in avoiding sports injuries are welcome to leave before the second, medical-focused part begins.

This talk is open to MedSoc members, GCSE and A Level PE students, and any staff with a general interest in sport.
